Circles of Confusion

Installation + Live-Performance | Super 8 + Sound | 2011

Circles of Confusion is a generative image and sound based expanded cinema work composed of Super 8 film-loop projections coupled with optically-sensitive sine-wave oscillators. Designed to function like a Theremin, these purpose-built synthesizers are each controlled by a pair of light dependent sensors that modulate pitch and volume proportional to the luminance of the projected images. These generative and reactionary conditions create a hyper-awareness of the boundaries that exist between two distinct processes of sensory perception and blur the conventional divisions between them by suggesting that they are at once complementary and transmutable.
